Opalux and De La Rue Announce Partnership

Opalux, the world’s leading developer and manufacturer of tunable photonic crystals, is pleased to announce that it has entered into a strategic partnership with De La Rue, the world’s leading anti-counterfeiting and security specialist for currency, identity and brand protection. The partnership will incorporate joint product development and sales on a global basis.

Opalux develops and manufactures tunable photonic crystals, smart materials that change colour in response to external stimuli. Based on this platform technology, Opalux has created a range of highly recognisable and secure features with distinct colour effects for government documents. Speaking about the partnership, Andrew Binkley, the Chief Executive Officer of Opalux said: ‘We are excited to combine our leading edge technology and security features with De La Rue’s integrated portfolio and global reach. We look forward to working together to create a strong set of highly-differentiated solutions.’

Commenting on the new partnership, Ulrich Walter, the Product Managing Director De La Rue’s Security Features and Identity Portfolio said: ‘As a security business, we spend every day staying ahead of the counterfeiter across currency, identity, tax stamps and brand protection. One of our core strategic priorities is to grow our security features portfolio by investing in research and development, as well as partnerships. Opalux has an exciting technology that we believe can play a significant role for our global customers, as part of an integrated portfolio and multiple solutions from De La Rue.’

About Opalux:

Since 2006, Opalux has created innovative, optically variable security devices to combat counterfeiting and improve the authentication of passports and banknotes.

Opalux’s OpalPrint Polycarbonate is an embedded polycarbonate security feature that can be personalized after polycarbonate lamination. This feature combines the document holder’s portrait with a bright, attractive, optically variable, colour-shifting image to combat counterfeiting and fraudulent alteration of passports and high security travel documents. OpalPrint Polycarbonate is laser personalized with the document holder’s portrait and biographical information, securely storing that information, and can be verified without tools.

Opalux’s ElastInk is an interactive mechanochromic security feature applied to banknotes. This feature provides a distinctive visible colour change when mechanically activated using finger pressure to increase ease of authentication of banknotes and to combat currency counterfeiting.

All of Opalux’s security features are built using its proprietary tunable photonic crystal technology platform. Through the expertise of its scientists and engineers—many of whom hold a Ph.D.— Opalux has become a global leader in innovative anti-counterfeiting security features. As a result of this leadership, Opalux has obtained extensive patent protection for its products and forged strong links with many leading security printers, suppliers, central banks and identity issuing authorities.
